Now I have learned (in most aspects of my life, thankfully) to be more flexible and realize the plan can always be altered and improved. It has a mind of its own and insists on its way! Thank goodness. I've discovered that what works for me is to play on paper with all the alternatives - even in some cases working out detailed designs, playing with samples and so on - and then allowing myself room for improvisation in the final piece: otherwise it goes dead! The benefit of all the preparation though is in exploring the possibilities thoroughly beforehand so that when I actually make it it goes together quickly and smoothly - and the design has simplified itself effectively in the process!
